Z'mer and Blue Skemanith
Played by: Charon
Character Name: Z'mer
Pronunciation:
Character Type: Dragonrider
Rank: Wingrider/ Sweeprider
Political Alignment: If Z'mer had more courage he might have been aligned with the Resistance, but as things are and as he is currently he's too afraid to do something that bold. So he goes on from day to day accepting things as they are, and secretly wishing they would change.
Age: 24
Gender: Male
Sexual Preference: Bisexual
Appearance:
When someone meets Z'mer the only thing that truly stands out about him is his body shape. He is tall and well muscled, able to tower intimidatingly if he so wished, appearing perfectly able of defending himself in contrast to his personality. If you suggested this to him he would be horrified though, and after a lifetime of women being skittish around him thanks to his appearance he purposefully hunches over, and wears loose clothes on most occasions. He prefers to keep his head shaved, less of a bother for him, but if he has a whim to stop his hair would reveal itself to be a dark auburn and wavy. His skin is a creamy tone, as if someone had poured a couple tablespoons of milk into a cup of Klah. Across his scalp is a nasty thread scar from a piece of thread that ate through his riding gear before Skemanith went between, and several other well-healed scars down his arms. They don't bother him, though sometimes rankers use it to accuse him of being a bad wingrider.
Personality:
Z'mer has learned the lessons given to nearly all blue riders at Fort, and while he has the privileges of being male he has the disadvantages of preferring men. As such he is very timid, and when in groups of people he tends to conform to the standards expected of him. In private he acts as he wishes, but he feels the threats of the rankers too realistically to rebel. Otherwise he is a very relaxed individual, his hobbies are working out and (secretly) cooking, something he picked up from his mother when he followed her around the lower caverns. He is aware this is also looked down upon, but also thinks not enough people notice him for it to cause issues. Obviously he doesn't stand up for himself, causing his poor blue extreme stress on occasion. However if someone insults his dragon it’s a different story. He can't believe that bronzes, browns, and golds are any better than his dear one (he may be messed up, but never Skemanith!), it’s the one button of his that's sure to bring forth fire. Part of the result of the Fortian atmosphere is that he is slow to smile or laugh, and is suspicious of anyone who speaks to him without reason.
Birthplace: Fort Weyr
Parents: An ex-candidate drudge and an unknown rider
History:
Z'mer was born Zommerty to an ex-candidate working in Fort's kitchens after a rider, drunk from a mating flight his dragon hadn't won, insisted on bedding her. As such, little Zommerty was raised as influenced by Fort's politics as a weyrbrat could be. His mother, resigned to her fate, nonetheless attempted to teach Zommerty more manners then is considered necessary for Fort raised men. She also pushed him to be physically active, and once he hit puberty to lift weights and otherwise become very fit, hoping this would protect him from the rankers within the weyr. Unfortunately his timidity and shyness made this a moot point, but it did leave him well suited to life as a rider. Once he felt mature enough he fully endorsed the weyrbrat privilege to stand by choice instead of by search, and when he was 17 he Impressed. Up to that point he had managed to stay in the unnoticed crowd of teenage boys by acting tough towards the girls (he remains ashamed to this day of taking advantage of a drunk female candidate), but Impressing a blue made that invisibility harder. Z'mer came to realize that he fancied S'karn, a boy who had Impressed a green at the same hatching, and he denied it and denied it until Skemanith won the green's first mating flight. Z'mer was forced to come to terms with his own sexuality, and he and S'karn grew closer and closer. They eventually became a solid couple, quietly settling into the same weyr, trying not to draw the ire of the rankers. Sadly, S'karn was one of the many who succumbed to tunnelsnake venom, leaving Z'mer and Skemanith bereft. S'karn had been the bold one of the couple, and without his presence Z'mer has tried to shrink back into the Weyr's preferred mold while hoping no one remembers his truancy.
~~Dragon~~
Dragon Name: Skemanith
Color: Blue
Age: 7
Appearance:
Skemanith is a mid-sized blue whose hide is the dark shades of newly fallen night or deep ocean seas. He is dark enough that his rider has had to restrict their night flying, otherwise other riders have trouble seeing him and it's nearly caused collisions. He is well proportioned, lean and muscular. He has many thin thread scars along his back from when he was a weyrling attempting the ambitious maneuvers he performs with skill now. His harness shows his weakness. After months of being bothered Z'mer gave in and paid for Skemanith to have a harness made that compliments his coloring, a special leather dyed a lighter blue to give the dragon (in his mind) a handsome appearance. Z'mer doesn't let him wear it during actual Threadfall, but during practice and races the blue flaunts it.
Personality:
It's as if when Skemanith was forming in the egg he was given all the courage and backbone his rider lacks. He has a sarcastic tongue and a quick temper, something that his talent in Threadfall barely makes up for as far as most of the people who fly with him are concerned. Just like his rider he enjoys working out, and it was his wish to improve their stamina that evoked Z'mer volunteering more often than more riders for a position as a sweeprider. The long flights allow Skemanith to test his limits, and means he is a blue who other greens and blue wouldn't want to mess with. His rider's lack of interest in conflict means Skemanith is kept from completely destroying all semblance of interest in the Fortian hierarchy, but that's all that does it. He feels free to speak to people besides Z'mer, including those without dragons. However, after S'karn and Kerth's death Skemanith has been more subdued, and hasn't flown a mating flight since. He would like to, but he respects his rider, who is still dealing with the loss even now.
Weyr of Orgin: Fort Weyr
Abilities and weaknesses: Skemanith has the average speed and stamina of most blues, but he has excellent aim and the agility to take the shots. In Threadfall Skemanith surpasses his fellows at firing oddly angled thread, and he loves every minute of it.
