Considerations for Play
The corresponding links listed contain several different topics that we suggest that you read up and understand in order to realistically play in our darker setting. These contain not only things that we think that you should know, but also thing that we have gotten questions about or things we have noticed that writers don't really know about when writing their character and would like clarification on.
What To Do With Your Ranker?- This page gives a little extra information on how each ranking character is viewd by those around them, as well as what might be expected of them. Also on this page are some roleplay suggestions for those ranks, for if you're not sure what to have that character doing but you want to post them. We hope you find this helpful. :)
Why Are We Dark?- This page explains Masena’s reign as Weyrwoman in detail, as she is the Weyrwoman who *truly* put the dark into Dark Fort. Things now might not be as dark as Masena’s ‘Old Fort’, but we felt it would be good for our players to know where the dark came from. Especially as our current Weyrwoman looks to have similar aims.
Politics- This page, divided up into 3 sections (Old Politics, New Politics, and Lower Cavern Politics) to make it easier to read, details not just the older political views that have been around Fort for a while, but the lower cavern specific political views and the foreign views that are appearing around Fort (given the increased number of strange faces wandering the hallways). We would request that you *PLEASE* look over these and decide if your character would lean a specific way and which views they might have. Details like this are what make gameplay interesting when views conflict between characters.
Southern/Istan Tensions- Fort has never much liked Southern Weyr and its liberal hippie views- *hated* might be a better term! This page describes *why* the Weyrs dislike Southern Weyr, and why that dislike has migrated to Ista with the majority of the Southern occupants having moved there after Southern was destroyed. Bear in mind that this invasion of their home is also what has set the nouveau-radical Istan’s tensions bubbling.
Women at Fort- If you are playing a female character, or are *thinking* of playing a female character, it is highly suggested that you read the info on this page to get a better understanding of exactly what a women’s ‘place’ is at Fort Weyr. This will better enable you to make sure your female character can fit realistically (and excitingly) into her new home.
Homophobia- Information describing how Fort Weyr has twisted the idea of being gay not only to suit dragonriding (where homosexual relationships *do* happen, even to bronzeriders) but also to suit their idea that those relationships make a man less of a man.
Pets- This page details the rarity of fire-lizards in the North, including Fort Weyr, our view on whers (which is different from the latest of the Pern books written by Todd McCaffrey), runner information, and lastly felines and canines info. This page includes information about candidates and weyrlings having pets, as well as our own specialized breeds of flits, whers, and runners called Lilacape Flits/Whers/Runners.
