Past Events
We understand what it’s like coming into a new game and not having a good description of some of the major events, and how that makes it much harder to make a character and accurately play them. So, this page is an attempt to highlight the major events that have happened at Dark Fort, which is the predecessor of our game Arisen Dark. Yes, most of the events listed here are briefly mentioned on the timeline (or have much longer descriptions on the ‘Tensions’ and ‘Why Are We Dark?’ pages), but while the timelines gives specific dates *this* page is intended to elaborate on the timeline entries. If something isn't explained enough here, or you see something mentioned in a post that you want a better explanation of, please feel free to ask us and we will pool our collective knowledge (and search archives) to better explain what you want to know.
Southern Conflict and Occupation:
The start of the game’s history revolves around the conflict Fort Weyr and High Reaches Weyr had with Southern Weyr (detailed on the ‘Tensions’ page). As a result of the High Reaches Weyrwomen Jesa’s hatred of Southern she paid renegades to drug breakfast at that Weyr. Either by design or accident, the morning of the drugging was a day of threadfall. Not only did many of the drugged riders die in ‘Fall but average people were killed and livestock and crops were destroyed. The Southerners, furious at their Weyr’s lack of action in fighting the thread and the death and destruction that followed, called for the other Weyrs to step in and help them. After a Conclave was called it was decided that 2 wings of Fortian riders would be transfered to assist the depleted Southern Weyr, and that a Fortian bronzerider would become Weyrleader. For 2 turns the Fortian riders occupied Southern Weyr. It was not a nice occupation, either, as the two very different sets of beliefs and values clashed severely. Details about the event finally came to light and what Weyrwoman Jesa had done and and how she'd managed to manipulate the Fort Weyrleaders, including the current Fort Weyrwoman Masena, into taking her stance on Southern Weyr was discovered. The Fortian riders, those who wanted to come home anyway, were brought back to Fort and control of Southern Weyr was given back to the Weyrwoman there, although not before a goldflight happened, both while the Conclave was at Southern and directly resulting in the death of the oldest of the Weyrwomen present.
Masena’s Reign:
During this time of conflict with Southern Weyr and the Fortian occupation in the South it was the reign of Weyrwoman Masena and Weyrleader K’met- who let her have her way. Masena was the Weyrwoman who took Fort’s traditional ‘old views’ and twisted them into exactly what she believed they should be. While Fort was not always the happiest and nicest of places, the Fort of Masena’s reign was much worse (detailed on the ‘Why Are We Dark?’ page). Lessers, who had always gotten the short end of the stick, were now treated worse; women had no rights and were considered only drudges and breeders, women riders were considered not just freaks but not even a real woman. Unworthy of the consideration a non-rider woman *might* have gotten as these riders rarely carried a baby to term because of going between, what use were they? But they also couldn't be considered men- after all if they *did* become pregnant and managed to keep it they would be forced out of fall and therefore their dragon would also be grounded. They couldn't win. And shells...if you were gay you had *better* not show it for fear of being beaten within an inch of your life or worse. Needless to say, things were so bad under Masena’s control that holders were even less willing to let their children be Searched by a Fortian rider, to save their children from having to live in that environment. Finally things got so bad that the bronzeriders stepped up and Masena was examined and considered unfit for leadership before she was shipped off to Ista where she later died.
Goldriders everywhere!
Masena was not the only goldrider at Fort when she was Weyrwoman, not by a long shot. Dirma, an older goldrider whose gold produced over 7 gold eggs though the turns, took the newly impressed Nalire under her wing (ensuring that Masena forever-after viewed Nalire as a threat). As soon as she was able to, Masena got Nalire forcibly transferred, separating the goldrider from her newborn son and the candidate she loved dearly (who happened to also be K’met’s son). Cadli, the daughter of one of Masena’s favorite seamstress, was thrown from Fort Hold into Weyrlife when she impressed gold. Without a different hand guiding her way, Cadli turned into an ‘errand girl’ for Masena, used and ordered around in any way that pleased the Weyrwoman, up to and including being ordered to bed with a bronzerider in order to entice them to Masena’s way of thinking. Masena would then question the rider as to whether he was pleased with the young goldrider’s performance and instruct Cadli to continue pleasing the rider until she said otherwise. But despite being used for Masena’s purposes, this young rider did attempt to do good, telling the female candidates that they could call on her gold if they needed help and to have some self-defence classes for the drudges...but neither of those ideas got off the ground. Kolana and Kamma were both goldriders mentored by Masena, and they both resented the position the other had. Cadli and Abrin were not threats to either of them, Dirma was a goldrider who was past the prime of her riding years, and Masena was the goldrider they both looked to and each believed that they would be her successor as Weyrwoman, however neither rider could control when their dragons would rise to mate.
The In-Between Turn:
In the turn between Masena leaving and the crazy Kamma becoming Weyrwoman, things were quiet. A Southern gold visiting the Weyrwoman-less Fort rose to Fly, throwing the Weyrleadership into confusion before Dirma took control of the situation and straightened things out. Goldriders Kolana and Kamma counted down the days till their golds would rise, as Cadli and Abrin’s golds had recently Flown, while the Southern goldrider and Dirma had worked out the issues with the Weyrleadership and so would not rise before Kamma and Kolana’s golds. Dirma, whose gold had stopped rising to mate a full 15 turns before the Pass began because of her age, would not become Weyrwoman although her word as an experience goldrider carried weight. However it was Kamma’s gold who rose first, placing this unstable woman as Weyrwoman and K’aktal as Weyrleader.
Kamma’s Reign:
Under Kamma’s control Fort was able to breathe easier, as she was not nearly the same Weyrwoman as Masena and the lives of riders and weyrstaff alike were not as threatened- but this was only by comparison! Not only were several bronzeriders killed, but they dared to kill Goldrider Abrin, in the Weyrwoman’s own Weyr! (was it the Resistance or someone else with a grudge? who knows...) After a Conclave was held and Goldrider Abrin’s position in the Weyr was filled by transferring Goldrider Rhiethona with Nyith, young Weyrleader K’sin vowed to find and stop the criminals who were killing rankers, who had dared to kill a goldrider! The criminals, who had fled to Southern, were tracked down and Dirma was sent both to interview them and to decide their punishment. Not long after that not Kamma’s gold rose to Fly..and a very short 3 days later Rhiethona’s gold rose to Fly too! Just a short month after both golds have Flown, Kolana died in her sleep and her gold betweens, found by her lover L’ael, and the next day Dirma is requested back at Fort from her interviews at Arolos, pulled out of retirement (at 92 turns old!) to become Kamma’s Weyrwomen Second. Kamma, with support from the other Fort goldriders, transferred Cadli and received in return goldrider Phaedra. The *official* reason was that Cadli got pregnant and was sick so needed the fresh fish and air High Reaches could offer, however none of the goldriders wanted to admit that it was because Cadli actually had attitudes way to close to Resistance ideas for their comfort. Imagine, a Resistance goldrider...the horror! Kamma’s time as Weyrwoman was cut short, however, when both her gold and Rhiethona’s clutched on the same day, and when one of Nyith’s eggs was accidentally damaged and began to hatch before Zarith’s, Kamma lost control of her gold who stomped all over Nyith’s clutch in an inccident to chill even the hardest Fortian hearts. Some of Nyith’s eggs survive the stomping and manage to impress, but once Kamma’s gold’s clutch were safely impressed Kamma was found unfit to be a Weyrwoman and was transferred out of Fort.
From Lots of Golds to Only Two:
So, now up to Turn 14 in history... let’s look at the goldriders who have come and gone in just 10 Turns time...
Masena was found incompetent and transferred but not before she transferred Nalire because she’d pissed Masena off. A Southern goldrider gained Weyrwoman status at Fort for a short while before Kamma became Weyrwoman. Cadli was thought to have Resistance leanings and was swapped with High Reaches goldrider Phaedra. Abrin was murdered and only a turn later Kolana died in her sleep after which Dirma was brought back from her Southern assignment to become Weyrwomen Second. Dirma’s promotion pissed Phaedra off and made her request a transfer away from Fort after which Nalire requested and received a return transfer to Fort. After many fights between the goldriders Kamma and Rhiethona and their mates, both clutching and then hatching on the same day was too much. Kamma lost control of her gold who ramaged all over Rhiethona’s gold’s clutch, destroying nearly all the eggs. Kamma was found unfit and transferred while Rhiethona, who was so distressed after her gold’s clutch was smashed, was also transferred.
All this left just the much too old Dirma and newly returned Nalire at the Weyr, the pair of them struggling to begin restoring Fort to its former glory after the constant arrival and departure of the other goldriders, and the actions of the two unstable Weyrwomen- Masena and Kamma.

Human Plague!
For the next two turns both Nalire as Weyrwoman and Dirma as Weyrwoman Second worked to correct some of the worst wrongs that had been done at Fort, and things were relatively smooth. Then word spread of a plague in the South, and current Weyrleader M’ayen put Fort Weyr in quarantine just before a ship carrying the Plague arrived in the North. Within a turn, not only was a girl’s body discovered by the Weyrlake but despite M’ayen’s attempts to prevent the Plague from infecting the Weyr, it came....After a hard day of Threadfall riders died from the contaminated food that had been served them by a kitchen drudge who was infected. As soon as plague in the kitchens was discovered it was locked down, but was the Headwoman fast enough to stop the spread? Sadly not, and the plague spread through the weyr, indiscriminate in killing- young rider in the prime of life, babe in the creche, or very old Aunt/Uncle in the lower caverns , it mattered not. At the end of that first month not only did Weyrleader and Weyrsecond die, but the nearly 100 Turn Goldrider Dirma couldn't survive either and left Fort essentially leaderless, with just one golden Weyrwoman locked away in the hopes of keeping her safe. In the nearly a turn before the next Weyrleadership Flight happened, the bronzeriders failed in their duty to Fort to band together during the crisis and arrange for suitable help for the stressed out goldrider. This left Nalire alone to carry all the weight and responsibilities for the Weyr on her shoulders..
But all was not lost! Because on the day the Weyrleader, Weyrsecond, and aged goldrider died Nalire’s own gold laid a clutch with a gold egg, sired by Ts'cull’s bronze! Within several sevendays of that clutch being laid a Southern Weyrhealer named K’ren arrived at Fort with the cure and a preventative vaccine and the quarantine was lifted...but the damage was done. Not only had that plague taken riders, leaders, and so many more, but Candidatemaster M’ayen was forced to supplement the male candidate ranks with the most likely of the not-yet-12-turn old weyrbrats just to be able to provide Nalire’s gold’s clutch with enough choices on Hatching day. The clutch, gold egg included, hatched in a timely manner and despite the worry that there would not be enough candidates all the new dragons impressed. That class went into training and a new goldrider, one who would later be compared with Goldrider Cadli for her very soft feelings (even taking a greenrider for a lover, what a spectacle! He was later shown the error of his ways with a severe bronzerider issued beating), began her lessons. Later it was confirmed just how soft Goldrider Sirasri was when, not long before the GhostWalker weyrling class was to graduate and were in the middle of Threadfall Sirasri pulled them out of fall when one of their clutchmates, A’ley, died. She was given grief over her decision to pull her class from ‘Fall, and the injuries resulting from that golden command, and the WeyrlingMaster used her as a strong example of how dangerous it is to be a soft ranker and how to not be so close with the lesser colors.

A Brown Weyrleader and Dragon Plague:
Not a mere 5 months after the clutch hatched Nalire’s gold Flew again, pressured to produce more eggs by the plague. And what a surprise Flight that was! Who knows if it was the gold herself who was just a little too tired after having a clutch when her rider had been sick, or if it was Nalire’s annoyance with the lack of action from her bronzeriders to help her for a full turn...but her gold was caught by a brown and so Brownrider G’murri became Weyrleader. This sparked much animosity between bronzeriders and brownriders, and between brownrider and brownrider, who believed that G’murri had overstepped a brown’s traditional place and was trying to make himself out to be better the he was. Rankers hurt and killed brownriders in retaliation, resistance members decided to take the chance to kidnap G’murri’s son and make demands, and lessers and non-riders bore the brunt of the bronzeriders’ frustration with those brownriders who used to be their trusted deputies.
Then, as if to prove to the Weyr that browns should *not* fly golds, Nalire’s gold only clutched 8 eggs. The animosity against the brown weyrleader, and brownriders in general, as well as his ‘freaky’ clutch came to a head a short 2 months later when someone snuck onto the Hatching sands and stabbed a knife through an egg, triggering their Hatching. Their ‘freak’ nature was further proved upon their hatching when inside one egg were a pair of bronzes! Despite their rudely started hatching all the eggs survived and the green whose egg was stabbed recovered from her injury.
At the same time as bronzeriders were blaming every brownrider for the treasonous actions of G’murri chasing, and worse WINNING, a goldflight when a larger and stronger clutch than a brown could provide was needed, dragons were sickening and with gray hides were dying all over the North. Fort was no exception. Unless called to fight Threadfall riders were quarantined to their weyrs, and the weyrlings to their barracks, and if a dragon even dared show up for wingdrills or Threadfall with sniffles or a cough to possibly infect the rest of their wing it was met with swift punishment. But despite those precautions, more riders than could be spared died as their dragons did, and still more were lost to Threadfall as the Weyr continued to do their duty- and the duty of other Weyrs too- despite being stretched much too thin to prevent injuries and deaths. AWLM R'fael's brown Seth was one of those taken by the plague, and R’fael himself was in the weyrlings barracks and not with his brown when his dragon died, sending him crazy in grief. Within moments of the brown's passing AWLM N'kulden mercy killed R'fael in the barracks in front of the DustRunners and warned them that this is what they could look forward to if they were not careful.
But as the clutch that had been sired by brown G’murri grew it was noticed that not a single one of those dragons had gotten sick (although one blue with a penchant for being the center of attention had pretended to). The healers immediately jumped on this strange occurrence, hoping desperately that there might be a cure or vaccine under the hides of the ‘freaky’ brown-sired clutch that might at least save some of the Weyr’s dragons. The discovery that the healers were right came way too late to save so many, however.
Even with them finding a cure for the plague and dropping quarantine, it took lots of convincing to get a second new goldrider transferred to Fort when goldriders were spread thin as it was, but Fort needed desperately a second mature gold until Sirasri’s own was fully grown and a proven clutching queen. So finally a new goldrider named Nioli was given transfer papers and reported to Fort...but no one could have known how much Nioli was going to clash with the current Weyrleadership.

A New Goldrider Transfer and Brownrider Animosity:
Toward the end of G’murri’s 11th month as Weyrleader Fort received her new goldrider transfer from High Reaches... and this goldrider helped to facilitate and grow the now angry feelings bronzeriders had for brownriders, becoming even worse after Nioli’s gold Flew. Despite the hatred brownriders had gained from just one of their number allowing his brown to chase a gold who rose to Fly, yet again a brown thought to try his luck at mating with one of these golden beauties. This time the brown did not win the gold’s flight, and Nioli was not near so forgiving about the brown’s attempt to fly her gold as Nalire had been. The brownrider, R’yko was punished by not only having to ride the wooden dragon for three days, but Nioli also had his face branded so everyone would know that this brownrider had *dared* to try and Fly her gold. Caught by ex- Weyrleader K’sin’s bronze, Nioli’s gold had soon clutched and her eggs hatched nearly without incident, protected by a brown wher that K’sin and Nioli posted on the sands as an extra guard. The only sadness was that the clutch’s sole bronze died on the sands before finding a lifemate.
A Bronze Weyrleader Ascends...and the Fall of Fort:
Finally G’murri’s reign as Weyrleader, a spot he’d ‘stolen’ from those bronzeriders who clearly deserved it more, came to an end when Nalire’s gold Flew and was caught by T’gan....And with Nalire and T’gan, supported by the youngest soft-hearted goldrider Sirasri, began what some of the hard core Forters, products of Masena’s Fort, would call the era of Fort’s Fall from its rightful place as the most distinguished First Weyr. *Change* was the word around the Weyr with Nalire and T’gan in charge. Yes, brownriders were mostly removed from the wingsecond positions they'd either had or gained through G’murri’s Weyrleadership (to thunderous applause from the bronzeriders), but replaced in those ranks were those bronzeriders who shared the same not-so-strictly traditional views. The Resistance were getting what they wanted ever so slowly: lesser colors were shown more courtesy, female blue and green riders were given less of a hard time as long as they worked hard, gay blue and greenriders were allowed to (for the most part) freely enjoy a meal together outside their weyr and not be beaten for spreading their perversion, those rankers who showed hints of that Masena ‘Old Fort’ view were removed from rank and replaced, punished if they acted on their views.
First Nalire’s gold clutched and her eggs impressed, and then Sirasri’s young gold had her first Flight, to be caught by one of her bronze clutchmates! Despite how well things were going, not everything could be changed at once. Just after Sirasri’s gold Flew, and nearly 6 months after Nalire’s flight and T’gan’s Weyrleadership began, a Weyr-wide punishment was given to K’sin for ‘showing disrespect’ ( the official reason given at his public whipping) to the Weyrwoman’s gold by keeping his bronze from chasing her gold, however K’sin’s own reasons were known only to the Weyrleaders as well as a few others that he discussed his thoughts with...thoughts that the Weyrleaders claimed to be treasonous. Ironic that accusations of softness should come from the ex-Weyrleader who Fort herself had once thought too soft and young- and a sign of how the times had changed. Not only was there that very public punishment, but Sirasri’s gold scandalised everyone by calling Female Candidates out of the Stands to Stand for her first clutch- one without a gold egg. This naturally led to backlash both for the females who obeyed the young gold and to all the other female candidates. This, it seemed, was going a little too far for even the more relaxed traditions of the Weyr to handle and Nalire began to take a more firm hand with the female candidates after that spectacle.

Radicals Make Their Move:
Just 3 months after Sirasri’s gold’s clutch hatched, Radicals began taking matters into their own hands. While those not-so-strictly traditional riders are in positions of rank, they sought to make it impossible for those ‘Old Fort’ and painfully traditional riders still remaining to regain their power. The surest way of that? To kill them. Although some of the deaths of the Radical’s targets were blamed as Resistance actions (as with M’zaj’s death) the Radicals didn't care if they receive the credit or not. They just want change *NOW*, not ‘sooner or later’. They begin releasing specially bred, smaller, more lethal tunnlesnakes into the Weyr too, causing Caverns speculation and providing an easy cover for why those of the worst riders begin showing up dead, killed ‘accidentally’ by tunnlesnake bites. T’gan took a stand against the Resistance over M’zaj and vowed that they will be found and punished.
Conflict Abounds:
However, the start of Turn 22 was not to be as peaceful and uneventful Turns End celebration might have let them believe. When the keening of the dragons passed on the message of the death of Weyrwoman Jerasi’s of High Reaches gold Rillishath was dead, followed shortly by the message of the rising of Southern’s Weyrwoman’s gold at the now goldless Weyr, the Weyrs of Pern were thrown into yet another Conclave. It was later revealed that candidates from Southern had been posing as candidates in all weyrs (other than Fort) looking for what Southern claimed was a stolen gold egg. If this was true or not was unknown to Fort, but they did allow the taking of the gold egg from the sands of High Reaches to Southern where it hatched and impressed. At that same Conclave it was decided that, in order to help bolster their plague decimated wings, they would welcome back to Fort any of their transfered riders- except those Fort riders who had been living at Southern.
Just 2 months after the Conclave, after the disaster at High Reaches, Nioli’s gold Flew again to be caught by T’lod’s bronze...and not a single brown tried to chase. In good time Nioli’s gold clutched, and it was a much needed 26 eggs that also thankfully Impressed without incident, except that once again there were girls impressing fighting dragons! But while that clutching and hatching were without incident, the conflict between this strictly traditional goldrider and the Weyrleadership resulted in Nioli transferring out of Fort mere days after Nioli’s gold’s clutch left the Hatching Sands. Even though the goldrider’s rather abrupt departure quickly became known, none but the Weyrleadership know her true reasons for leaving...and they weren't speaking. Speculation among Fort’s more hard core rankers, seeing it as another attack in their direction, was rife.

An Istan Goldrider’s Fortian Occupation:
Despite Nioli’s abrupt departure from Fort, it only took Nalire a couple of days of talking with the Weyrleaders and Weyrwomen of the other Weyrs before a goldrider was found willing to transfer to Fort. Not only had a willing goldrider been found so quickly, the most surprising fact, given the reputation Fort Weyr had with holding onto their goldriders, was that this goldrider was from soft-hearted Ista and had actually requested the transfer to Fort! A goldrider *wanting* to come to Fort seemed almost too good to be true for Nalire...and upon Devorah's arrival Nalire found out it *was* too good to be true. Not only was Devorah even more strictly traditional in her viewpoint than Nioli, but so were the two bronzeriders Ista talked them into taking with her.
And just when it looked like the stage was set for them to have another fight on their hands with another abrasive goldrider with outdated views, tragedy struck Fort’s newest goldrider as it had so many of her previous ones. Devorah's beloved weyrmate J'tor fell victim to yet another of these mysterious and deadly bites. Sympathetic the Weyrleadeship was, but they still couldn't give credence to those who would insist this was anything more then another tragic accident. It was just that painful rearguard, unwilling to let go of their past glory, making noise.
They’d come to regret it in the worst way possible as the events of the tumultuous night that brought their ancient Southern enemy to its knees also swept them away as well.
And in the hazy light of dawn that followed, there stood only one Gold, and one way forward...
Hers.
