Tallan
Played By: Rabble
Character Name: Tallan
Pronunciation: Tal-lan
Character Type: Apprentice
Rank: Apprentice
Political Alignment: Politics? What Politics?
Age: 14
Gender: Male
Sexual Preference: Bisexual
Appearance:
He has curly hair which is a natural white-blond, brushing the top of his shoulders. His grayish eyes sometimes seem as if they're looking right through a person - and other times as if they have nothing 'home' behind them. He has a 'delicate' look about his bones, making him seem fragile. His pale skin doesn't help - he burns but never tans, so he stays out of the sun. His mouth is wide, with a full bottom lip. His hands are small and soft. He's one of those young teenagers who might be either a boy or girl - some of the drunker customers never realized the 'girl' wasn't.
Personality:
Bitter at having a life he doesn't like, Tallan lives only for for the moment. He doesn't think about the future much, as he can't see how to have the life he likes. He wishes everyone would just leave him alone - that he could somehow rely only on himself, not needing the marks his craft brings him.
At other times he just wishes he'd never been born - after all, it's not like there's anything to look forward to. His own mother hadn't cared enough to find him a craft. He doesn't even understand why anyone would *want* to pay for his current craft. He has no idea how soon it will be before he'll have his own hormones bowl him over - and he's probably happier that way.
And then there's the times he just wishes someone would look after him, as he sees others being cared for, even if he stopped thinking of himself as a child years ago. A mind healer could probably help him, but to Tallan others only ever want one thing. And he doesn't enjoy giving it.
He still has pride - he loves his hair, despite the unwanted attentions it brings him, and he keeps a fragile hold on his dreams of having a better life, somehow...
Birthplace: Small cothold west of Fort Hold.
Parents: His father is cotholder Boallan, now brownrider B’alan, and his mother Talita, who remains at the tiny cothold, now run by B’alan’s younger brother Boatal
History:
The child of a pillow crafter, he can only assume that his father was one of the many who paid their way in to his aging mothers' furs. His earliest memories were of his mother smiling and laughing, but Tallan can't believe that the woman he knew later had ever smiled in her life.
Unknown to Tallan, he was kidnapped by a woman who then bought the boy up as her own, after she had suffered from repeated miscarriages.
Tallan spent many nights of his childhood waiting for a customer to leave so he could creep in to the bed he shared with his ‘mother’ and sleep. He certainly didn't realize that his parents were so desperate to find him that his father became a Candidate with the aim of being able to search all of Pern for his lost son, with his mother’s full agreement.
When Tallan was 12, he ran away from 'home', when a trader passing by had his herdboy searched and needed a replacement for a short term. Settling in to a tavern, he paid for his room and board by joining his mother’s ‘craft’. He felt useless, lost, outcast and is very tired of pretending he enjoys this life just to keep the customers happy.
It came as a complete surprise when someone came to the brothel, spoke to the house master, and took Tallan away. He thought he was being taken to a new brothel but instead the brownrider, claiming to be his father, arranged an apprenticeship for Tallan.
