Jairan
Played By: Charon
Character Name: Jairan
Pronunciation: Ja-eye-ron
Character Type: Candidate
Rank: Candidate
Political Alignment: Southern but slightly conservative
Age: 17
Gender: Male
Sexual Preference: Homosexual
Appearance:
Jairan is a boy of medium height, at about 5'9", and has the unhealthy hue of someone who spends all day hunched over delicate tools. He tries to exercise on a regular basis to avoid being useless physically, but he all too often gets enraptured with his work and loses all track of time. His only saving grace is that he has some arm musculature from his days as a junior apprentice and the physical labor lowly apprentices are assigned.
Jairan’s eyes border on sapphire and his hair is a black that is (according to him) obnoxiously curly. He lets it grow out no longer then the top of his shoulders, and then chops it off to the top of his ears to let it begin the process over again. He can’t stand it getting in the way; his peers can tell he has been working when his hair is pinned back away from his face. He has very defined facial features, his nose has a bend where it was once broken and against his pale skin his dark eyebrows truly animate his expressions.
Personality:
Jairan working and Jairan off work are two different subjects. While working in his field of expertise Jairan is detail oriented and precise, he understands what needs to happen, and how to do it. For this same reason he only works well under someone he trusts and has seen do efficient, good work. Without this assurance he feels as if his skills are being misused, and will subtly try to make improvements in the “sloppy” or “unskillful” actions of his superior. This can lead to confrontation, and soon after a Jairan who is storming out of crafthall, swearing never to work with that particular jewelry master again. However, those working under him will admit that he is a good teacher, even if he’ll oftentimes bribe his way out of normal smithing chores by agreeing not to reveal an apprentices’ mistake. Once he was exposed to weyr life he also kept a tendency to refer to dragons in his father's sailor lingo, which occasionally has interesting results, especially the tendency to call all of them “she”.
Unfortunately once the spell of concentration from work is broken he does have a tendency to overreact if stressful or unexpected situations arise, which can lead to even more chaos than is necessary. He enjoys a good game of cards, especially if wagers are involved. Once work hours are over he doesn't feel held to any of the ranking courtesies, and tries to manage good relationships with the junior apprentices under him. He also has a tendency to carry his work home, dreaming up new jewelry designs from what’s around him.
Birthplace: Forest Edge Hold
Parents: A journeyman seacrafter and an apprentice miner
History:
Jairan was born in Forest Edge Hold to a journeyman seacrafter (Hyuren) who was upriver visiting his parents and siblings and an apprentice miner girl (Jaida) who he romanced during his stay. His mother cared very much for little Jairan, but was simply too young to care for him and wanted to continue with her craft, so he ended up being fostered to his older aunt, Nira. Jairan grew up surrounded by an interesting mix of different trades, and while he loved listening to his father’s tales of oceanic adventure, his aunt's work is what he eventually decided to specialize in. Jewelry craft. There was something about the art, taking imperfect hunks of gemstone and turning them into miniature beauties, it enthralled him. He was talented in it too, his detailed nature perfect for the craft.
Both his biological parents kept up with the boy, even though he considered Nira his ‘Mom’. Jaida went on to have one more child, another son. Hyuren visits his children when he can, and Jairan picked up an unfortunate amount of seacraft language from his father. Nira has managed to scold Jairan into obedience over some of the more foul language but he slips now and then.
Once Jairan entered his teens he had his first crush, though much to Hyuren’s disappointment it was on a boy. Unfortunately the object of the crush wasn’t terribly happy about it either, and the day Jairan confessed was also the day Jairan ended up with a black eye and broken nose. After that Jairan stayed quiet about any romantic impulses he may have had, though he secretly dreams of finding his perfect guy. Very secretly.
When Jairan turned 17 he had the pleasure of graduating to senior apprentice jewelry crafter, and Nira arranged for him to stay at Southern Weyr. He was hoping to make a positive impression there, as well as take on any students who wish to learn about gems. The dragons, he suspected, would provide a source of inspiration that he hoped to use to gain journeyman status. In fact, after a combination of seeing his first hatching and impressing his own green flit, it was so inspirational that he searched down the rider who'd brought him to Southern and made mention of the words "searched" and "candidate". He had barely gotten settled into the barracks when the earthquake struck...the sun dawned upon the destruction and with it came word that the majority of his family was dead (nearby holds had not fared much better then the weyr) and he needed to find refuge elsewhere. As such he grabbed a ride wherever they were taking the remaining stragglers, and ended up at Fort Weyr.
~~Pet~~
Pet Name: Peridot
Pet Species/Color: Firelizard/Green
Gender: Female
Appearance:
This little flit is a yellow-green reminiscent of the stone she’s named after, with veins of darker greens running through her wings. She’s small even for a green, and has difficulty managing any stamina at all thanks to her size and relative fragility.
Personality:
She is fiercely attached to her pet, and despite her small size has grandiose delusions of being the toughest thing around. Almost in representation of this the tiny flit has a tendency to force her pet to tie whatever scrap of fabric she finds appealing that day around the base of her neck, forming a cloak much like young children play around with. These scraps might also end up being a source of contention between Peridot and the rest of the weyr, if she sees a pattern that is ~pretty~ it will get stolen.
