B'tram and Brown Hyroth
Played By: Charon
Character Name: B'tram
Pronunciation:
Character Type: Dragonrider
Rank: Wingrider
Political Alignment: Istan idealist
Age: 29
Gender: Male
Sexual Preference: Heterosexual
Appearance:
Looks are deceiving in this case, B'tram has a welcoming and soft face with deep brown eyes, a ready smile, and dark chestnut hair so soft it could be compared to silk. His slender build and average height hide his strength, and if his muscles aren't enough there's always his fellow Istans. He is almost always in uniform, and he keeps his hair trimmed and parted neatly, believing that constant vigilance is the key to being successful. He lost the last two fingers on his right hand during a knife fight at Ista Hold during a gather. He had been gambling at one of the card tables, and when he won what another player considered an unusual number of hands the player make some disparaging remarks about dragonriders. B'tram did not appreciate that, but at the time too many were watching. He followed the commenter later, expecting him to be an easy victim, but the other man was carrying a concealed blade. In the resulting skirmish his fingers were mangled, though the other man ended up worse. Naturally, he can't spread that around, so if anyone asks about it he simply says it was an "accident".
Personality:
B'tram followed Devorah and J'tor to Fort for a reason, and that reason is duty. He has taken to heart what he believes should be the proper code of conduct for every brown rider, which is to support the proper way of doing things and enforce it to the lesser colors, thus allowing the gold and bronze riders to get on with the truly important business. His firm and real faith that this system is the best way for the weyr to run has made him valuable tool to use in the political scene. He will happily use his innocent appearance to lure in miscreants and punish them soundly, in whatever way he sees most appropriate. However, to those he approves of he will always back up, even if in reality the person is in the wrong. B'tram is of the opinion that the circumstances regarding conflicts can be adjusted after the correct person has emerged from them. For all his faults he is intelligent and hard to fool, and if he ever loosens up he would be a great asset for ensuring the weyr runs smoothly. He spends much of his free time doing what he views are proper dragonrider extracurricular, such as drinking with his wingmates or flirting (sometimes manipulatively) with the cavern girls.
Birthplace: Ista Weyr
Parents: A bronze rider and a weyrhealer
History:
B'tram's father was the least likely person you'd have expected to sire a traditionalist like B'tram, a bronze rider who fully accepted the more liberal views Southern and Ista endorse. However, due to expectations put upon both bronze riders and weyr healers their child was raised in the crèche, where little Betram was raised by a woman who lived firmly by the rules set (in her mind) by rank, color, and gender. By the time he'd gotten old enough for his father to take an interest he had already been thoroughly influenced and had decided he wanted to be a bronze rider and have the world at his fingertips. It didn't help matters that he was an early, and handsome bloomer. He had no problems getting his way, though he was careful not to leave any weyrbrats behind him. The only hit his ego took during his youth was that at his first hatching he impressed to a brown, but he decided that Hyroth was so wonderful that he would learn the proper role for a brown rider instead, and the supporting role wasn't terrible. At least it wasn't green. He rose through the ranks amongst like minded individuals and became known for his dedication to their cause. He did anything and everything asked of him by J'tor, and so the transfer was only natural. Admittedly, his loyalty was one of duty more than emotional attachment, so when the bronze rider fell to the tunnelsnake bite it caused less sadness to B'tram and more frustration. He has switched his loyalty to Devorah instead but looks forward to the day when she had a mate worth working for.
~~Dragon~~
Dragon Name: Hyroth
Color: Brown
Age: 15
Appearance:
Hyroth is large for a brown, with a large wingspan to match. On old earth he would have been considered the color of molten chocolate, that rich creamy color, and on his hide you can see swirls of darker shades mixed in, giving him the appearance of a brown mirage. He is one of the few dragons not to have any noticeable thread marks, and B'tram will remark pride-fully to anyone who mentions it that it’s because he kept Hyroth in line the entirety of weyrling training and he follows orders in Threadfall without second thought.
Personality:
From hatching B'tram taught Hyroth what browns were supposed to do, along with the roles of all the rankings, and little hatchling Hyroth happily absorbed everything he was told. He saw that not all of his clutchmates agreed with that, but B'tram had told him Ista wasn't very good at making people behave as they should, so Hyroth absorbed that as well. Now, 15 years later, he is a brown whose personality matches his rider. He expects the chromatic colors in his wing to behave, and is properly subservient to the bronzes. However, he is a little more tractable then his rider, being a dragon he has a hard time understanding exactly why greens and blues are supposed to be worth less than him. When his rider isn't keeping an eye on him he does relax more, enjoying joking around with his wingmates (*gasp* even the smaller ones!). He is unaware of many of B'tram's manipulations, and naturally trusts his rider’s story of how events happened.
Weyr of Origin: Ista Weyr
Abilities and weaknesses: His forte is stamina, while his speed isn't great and neither is his maneuverability, his stamina is fantastic. If B'tram let him do such a thing he could probably challenge the smaller bronzes in a queen flight, but that would be challenging rank and *that* would be unacceptable.
